Xupplement

A Health Tracking App

I designed an app that would help users to track their own supplement and vitamin use, after I struggled to find a system that would work for myself.

Programs Used, Figma, Miro
Timeframe: 1 week

Goals

A robust notification system
Ease of use
An app that would support high levels of customization, but would also have common supplements pre-loaded for users.
Allowing users to access a community to share thoughts and reviews of different supplements, without bias and advertisement

Research

I conducted research in the form of interviews with people who were currently taking supplements, as well as those who were not currently, but had thought about it in the past or were currently thinking about it.
I found that many users fell into two categories: One was those who were currently taking supplements, and were happy with what they had, or had created their own custom supplements and routines. The second group was those who had been interested in taking supplements, but had trouble remembering to take them consistently, and often became less interested when they felt that if they could not remember to take them consistently, these supplements had no effect.
I created two personas to map out the goals and frustrations of these two groups, Amy and Chris.

Frustrations

  • Forgetting to take supplements
  • Wanting to track history of their own supplement use
  • Biased reviews make it hard to know the truth about different products

Features

  • A customizable notification system that will prompt the user to take and log supplements
  • A detailed and editable history of the user’s use of supplements
  • A checklist of what would be taken that day, and times at which to take it
I was excited to create a two-part search function that would separate both the generic vitamin or supplementation and individual brands, allowing users to share reviews and notes on each separately.
With these features in mind, I created a feature map of the app.

Design

I began to create a UI for the app, focusing on making it simple and lightweight. I chose a bold color scheme to create a memorable app environment. I also designed assets for the app logo and icon, using a bold, futuristic style.
I now began to create wireframes for Xupplement. I wanted to keep features of the app simple, lightweight, and intuitive.

Final Design

In creating Xupplement I added several things, including an opportunity for users to purchase products directly from the app. Including this feature may make users more likely to use Xupplement for their own preliminary research about supplements and vitamins. I also created a dark mode for the app, to better accommodate users.

Final Thoughts

I enjoyed creating the app, and found it fun and challenging. With more time to work on it, I would like to create more interactions and animations for the app prototype. I would also be interested in a future feature of promotional codes for products that are linked through the app, further incentivising users to use Xupplement for research and outside of tracking.
